Bay Area Bahá'ís Call for Support in Defense of Imprisoned Bahá’ís in Iran

(San Francisco, CA) Bahá’ís from over 100 communities in the Bay Area will host a public gathering in support of religious freedom and human rights in Iran on Wednesday, August 12 at 8 p.m. at the Herbst Theater in San Francisco. The event is dedicated to seven Iranian Bahá’í leaders who have been imprisoned in Tehran for more than a year on false charges stemming from their membership with the country’s Bahá’í religious minority. Mr. Farhad Sabetan, a representative of the Bahá’í International Community, will deliver the keynote address.

Despite protests from international human rights organizations, government officials, and prominent individuals, such as Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi and Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi, no official court date has been set for the seven Bahá’í leaders, who could face execution if convicted. More than 200 Bahá’ís have been executed by Iranian authorities since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.

There are roughly 4,000 Bahá’ís in the Bay Area—some are Iranian and have been directly affected by the ongoing persecution of the Bahá’í Faith in their native land, having lost friends, family, and possessions. Local Bahá’ís are currently writing to their members of Congress to gather additional co-sponsors for two resolutions, H.Res. 175 and S.Res.71, which call for the release of the Iranian Bahá’í leaders and other Bahá’í prisoners. The Bahá’í Faith is the largest non-Muslim religious minority in Iran, with over 300,000 adherents.
